Homework: Introduction to Blockchain Technology

មូលសង្ខេប / Abstract

This assignment gives an overview of blockchain technology, including its definition, history, main components, and types. It also explains the differences between blockchain and traditional databases. In addition, the assignment describes real-world applications of blockchain in areas such as supply chain management and healthcare. Overall, it shows how blockchain can provide secure, transparent, and decentralized data management.

I: Overview and History of Blockchain

1. Define Blockchain: Blockchain is a digital ledger shared across many computers (nodes) instead of being kept by one authority. Blockchain is a digital record system that stores information on many computers instead of one central computer. Information is stored in blocks, and each block is connected to the previous block using a cryptographic hash. The network uses a consensus mechanism to make sure that transactions are valid. Because the blocks are connected, it is very difficult to change information after it has been recorded.

2. History Timeline:

Year

Milestone

1980s

Early ideas about protecting digital records using cryptography were developed.

1991

Haber and Stornetta proposed using a chain of blocks to protect and time-stamp documents.

2008

Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin as a practical use of blockchain.

2009

Bitcoin was launched as a decentralized digital currency and used Proof of Work to solve the double-spending problem.

2015

Ethereum was introduced with smart contracts, which allowed programs to run automatically on the blockchain.

3. Blockchain vs. Traditional Databases:

§  Centralization vs. Decentralization: Traditional databases are usually controlled by one organization. Blockchain is controlled by many computers called nodes. Example: A company's database may be managed by its IT department, while Bitcoin is maintained by many computers in its network.

§  Data Immutability: In a traditional database, authorized users can change or delete information. In blockchain, information is very difficult to change after it is recorded. Example: A company can edit a customer record in a normal database, but changing an old blockchain transaction is much more difficult.

§  Trust Model: Traditional databases usually depend on a trusted administrator. Blockchain uses cryptography and consensus to verify transactions. Example: A bank can approve transactions through its staff, while blockchain transactions are checked by the network.

II. Blockchain Fundamentals

1.Key Components of Blockchain:

_Blocks: Blocks store transaction information, a timestamp, and the hash of the previous block.

_Chains: Blocks are connected together to form a chain. This makes it difficult to change old information.

_Nodes: are computers that participate in the blockchain network. They help store information, check transactions, and reach agreement on the ledger.

_Decentralization: means that there is no single person or organization controlling the whole network. Many independent nodes help verify transactions.

2. Types of Blockchain:

Type

Benefit

Limitation

Public Blockchain

High transparency and security.

Can be slower and use more energy.

Private Blockchain

Faster and suitable for organizations.

Less decentralized and less transparent.

Consortium Blockchain

Balances control and decentralization.

Members still need to trust each other.

3. Blockchain Applications:

1. Supply Chain Management: Blockchain can be used to track products from their origin to the customer. It can help companies check where a product came from and improve transparency. For example, IBM Food Trust uses blockchain to track food from farm to table.

2. Healthcare: Blockchain can be used to manage patient records securely. It can help protect the information and keep the data accurate.
