Some dentists combine more than one of these options in order to have a very interesting career. Here at the University of Puthisastra, our aim is to prepare students well for their future dental career, whatever that may be. Dentistry requires a good intellect along with good hand skills. It is often said that dentistry is both an “art” and a “science”. It also provides many opportunities to help people to improve their health and their smile. This is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a dentist.

This comprehensive 3-day course, led by the esteemed Dr. Anthony Goh, promises an enriching experience in the management of wisdom tooth extractions.
Course Overview: This course aims to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for wisdom tooth surgery. Over the span of 3 days, participants will engage in didactic sessions, laboratory exercises, and hands-on surgical experiences under the guidance of experienced oral surgery specialists.

Dr. Tak Ranuch is Head of Periodontics and Implantology in the Faculty of Dentistry at UP. At the recent Cambodian Dental Association Conference, he was elected President for a two-year term. This is a high honor, and Dr Ranuch will have a very busy schedule for the next two years. He will be invited to represent Cambodia at many international conferences and meetings and to lead the Association in fulfilling its mission here. Recently, he took responsibility for the publication of the Cambodian Dental Journal, which featured a lot of research by students of UP.
Dr. Ranuch is one of our most popular lecturers and clinical tutors and has also been involved in teaching postgraduate courses for dentists at UP. We warmly congratulate Dr. Ranuch on his success and wish him well during his term as President of the Cambodian Dental Association.

During the semester break, Mak Sangdor, a year 7 dental student at UP, visited the prestigious Melbourne Dental School at the University of Melbourne for two days.
On the first day, he was warmly welcomed by Professor Alastair J. Sloan, Head of Melbourne Dental School, and his staff and dental students. Later he was taken on a tour of the University of Melbourne Campus, Melbourne Dental School facilities, Dental Simulation Lab and Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne, including their dental museum. He was able to spend time testing the very advanced haptic devices in the Haptics Virtual Reality Simulation Lab. In the evening, he was invited to dinner by Dr Brenda Ryan, who is a Senior Dental Therapy Lecturer and several other staff.
On the second day of the visit, was allowed to do clinical observation and attend seminars, in Pediatric Dentistry and Endodontics. He was able to observe and discuss the management of interesting clinical cases with the students and supervisors during his visit to the hospital.
Following the visit to the Melbourne Dental School, Sangdor was invited to have lunch with Dr. Siew-May Loo, clinical supervisor at Melbourne Dental School and Dr. Brenda Ryan at a local Cambodian restaurant. Later in the following week, Ms. Trudy Poole, a former dental therapist in Melbourne Dental School and her husband took Sangdor on a tour to see Australian native animals and Frankston beach.
Sangdor is very grateful to have had this wonderful opportunity to travel and learn, and feels inspired to improve his knowledge in the future. And he specially would like to thank Dr. Brenda Ryan for arranging his visit to the Melbourne Dental School and for her exceptional hospitality. Last but not least, he would like to thank Prof. Callum Durward and Prof. Rodrigo Marino for their help in arranging the visit.
On March 20th, 2024, the UP hosts an outdoor interactive activity to celebrate World Oral Health Day. Aimed at community members, the event provided a platform to educate and engage individuals on the importance of oral health. Taking place in the parking space outside UP Health Center from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the session featured demonstrations promoting proper tooth brushing techniques, alongside educational sessions highlighting the significance of oral hygiene.
One of the key objectives was to showcase the UPHC’s commitment to promoting oral health within the community, fostering a deeper connection between healthcare providers and the public. Additionally, the event served as an opportunity to express gratitude to Colgate Company for their continued support in advancing the field of dentistry at UP, both presently and in the future.
Through this initiative, participants not only gained valuable insights into maintaining oral health but also discovered the resources available at UPHC for their healthcare needs. The event underscored the importance of collaboration between healthcare institutions and the community in promoting overall well-being, marking a significant step towards achieving better oral health outcomes for all.

UP has many of the top dentists in Cambodia as lecturers. Most of our lecturers and over half of our clinical tutors have Masters or PhD degrees, mostly from overseas. We have on staff specialists in restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, pediatric dentistry, preventive dentistry, dental public health, oral pathology and oral maxillofacial surgery – as well as many of the best general dentists in the country. These dentists are dedicated to making you the best you can be. Our team require excellence in the dental hospital, where every student is closely supervised, and provided with guidance and support during the clinical years 4 to 7. Many of our tutors and lecturers come from the top dental clinics in Phnom Penh including Roomchang, Pachem, Mastercare, Royal Phnom Penh Hospital. If you want to be the best – you need to learn from the best. This is what you are offered at UP.
Facilities
UP has the best facilities
UP has a modern 19 chair dental hospital with high quality equipment and a full range of materials available for students to use (including implants). The chairs are from the Japanese company Belmont, and we also have the only DENTAL MICROSCOPE of any dental school in Cambodia. Very soon we will also have a state-of the art LASER for soft tissue surgery. And we have plans to invest in a Cone Beam CT scanner in the near future, to add to our panex/lateral cephalometric Xray machine from Italy. We are also well-equipped for implants and rotary endodontics –students can do in their final year. In our SIMULATION LABORATORY we have 30 mannequins from Japan. Students can practice all types of clinical procedures on plastic teeth – prior to treating patients. Our dental laboratory is well equipped with about 30 articulators and 20 micromotors. Later this year UP is planning to set up a working CERAMIC LAB which can make crowns and bridges. It will be run by our 2 experienced dental technicians, both trained at Mahidol University in Thailand. Having such a wide range of modern dental equipment at UP allows our students to provide high quality dental care to patients, and greatly enhances their learning.
International Relationship
Most of UP dental students have the opportunity to participate in international conferences or exchangesOver half the senior students at UP have the chance to participate in an overseas exchange program, or to attend an international conference. The UP Faculty of Dentistry has MOUs with many top overseas dental schools – and this has lead to outbound exchange programs with Thailand (Khon Kaen and Mahidol), Malaysia (UiTM and MAHSA), Indonesia (Universitas Indonesia), USA (University of New England), Australia (James Cook University) and Japan (Hiroshima). We also have an annual program for 3 students to visit Japan sponsored by our partner Denriche Asia. Recently, 5 UP students been to Japan in the Sakura Science Exchange Program and 10 more will go to Taiwan in a Rotary Sponsored Program.. These exchanges and conferences (where students are encouraged to present their research) help to expose students to new knowledge, new cultures, and life-changing experiences, as well as helping to build strong links with universities and fellow-students overseas.
