Homework for Introduction to Blockchain Technology chapter 1
I. Overview and History of Blockchain 1. Define Blockchain: Blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that records transactions in connected blocks across many computers. Once information is verified through consensus and added, it is very difficult to change, which provides transparency, security, and immutability. 2. History Timeline: • 1980s: Early ideas about secure digital timestamps and cryptographic records were developed. • 1991: Stuart Haber and W. Scott Stornetta proposed a system for securely timestamping digital documents. • 2008: Satoshi Nakamoto introduced the Bitcoin concept and its blockchain system. • 2009: Bitcoin launched, becoming the first practical decentralized blockchain network. • 2015: Ethereum launched and introduced programmable smart contracts, allowing blockchain to support decentralized applications. 3. Blockchain vs. Traditional Databases: Blockchain is decentralized, meaning many computers maintain the same ledger, while a traditional database is usually controlled by one organization, such as a bank. Blockchain records are difficult to alter after confirmation, whereas a database administrator can usually edit or delete records. Blockchain also uses consensus mechanisms to validate transactions, while traditional databases generally rely on authorized users or administrators. II. Blockchain Fundamentals 1. Key Components of Blockchain • Blocks: Containers that store transaction data and other information. • Chains: Blocks are linked together chronologically using cryptographic hashes. • Nodes: Computers connected to the blockchain network that store, verify, or process blockchain data. • Decentralization: Control and data are distributed across many nodes instead of being controlled by one central authority. 2. Types of Blockchain • Public _ Benefits: Anyone can participate, providing high transparency. _ Limitation: Can be slower and require more computing resources. • Private _ Benefits: Provides faster processing and greater control over access. _ Limitation: It is less decentralized because one organization controls the network. • Consortium _ Benefits: Several organizations can share control and data securely. _ Limitation: Decision-making can be more complicated because multiple organizations are involved. 3. Blockchain Applications • Finance: Blockchain is used for cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, allowing people to transfer value without relying entirely on a traditional bank. It can make international transactions more transparent and potentially reduce processing time. • Supply Chain: Companies can use blockchain to record the movement of products from manufacturers to customers. For example, each step can be recorded on a shared ledger, helping businesses verify a product's origin and track its journey.
